June 23, 1968 – July 2, 2025

The sisters of Tracey Gilbeau share with heavy hearts that she passed away unexpectedly due to medical complications.

Born in Geraldton, Ontario, on June 23, 1968, Tracey was the beloved daughter of the late Mary Gilbeau and the late William Finlayson. She was predeceased by her brothers: Tommy, Kenny, William (Sonny Boy), and George Gilbeau; her sisters Karen Baxter and Virginia Finlayson and her niece Denise Desmoulin.

Tracey is survived by her  sisters Cecilia Gilbeau (Ron), Lucia Desmoulin (Lewis), Audrey Gilbeau, and Georgette Gilbeau, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will carry her memory forward with love.

Tracey lived life with fierce independence, dancing to the rhythm of her own drum and never hesitating to speak her truth. She was bold, unfiltered, and full of fire—but also deeply compassionate. Her empathy for those facing hardships was a quiet current that ran deep beneath her vibrant exterior.

Known for her striking beauty and colourful character, Tracey had a laugh that lit up rooms and a creative soul that imagined new worlds. Before an accident over two decades ago altered her path, she was a powerful presence on the powwow trail. A gifted fancy shawl dancer who later embraced women’s traditional style, she carried herself with the dignity and pride of her Anishinaabe heritage.

Tracey’s connection to the land and our ways was strong, shaped in part by her time with the late Ida and David Megan, who loved her dearly and helped nurture her spirit.

Tracey’s life was not defined by her past—she blazed her own trail, on her own terms. She was a protector of those she loved, a proud Anishinaabe woman who stood firmly in her truth and identity.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Her life will be held on Thursday July 31, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Faith City Church located at 360  Black Bay Road.

In honouring Tracey, we remember a woman who lived courageously, who loved deeply, and who remained true to who she was.

Live like a dandelion.

A dandelion is not as beautiful as a rose, not as beautiful as a lily, not as eternal as an edelweiss. A dandelion does not have a crown that makes it look attractive.

Dandelion is also not as fragrant as jasmine.

But dandelions are the strongest flower.

It can still grow among wild grasses

even in the cracks of rocks. Dandelion looks fragile but it is so strong, so beautiful, so brave. No matter how broken you are, you have the power to grow back. Like a dandelion.
