10 December 1940 - 6 July 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sandra “Sandy” Arlene Turek (nee Squires) on 6 July 2025.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba she was the devoted and loving wife of Michael (predeceased), dear sister to Murray (Olga), and loving mother to daughter Kelly (predeceased), son Todd (Patti), and her “adopted child,” Robert. Adored grandmother to Tyler and Kurtis (Maddison) and proud great-grandmother to Charlee, Haylee, Tenlee, Elliot and Romie. She also leaves behind her beloved kitty, Libby. Sandy will be missed by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Sandy married the love of her life, Michael, on Valentine’s Day in 1964. Mike and Sandy enjoyed many happy years together at Lac Des Milles Lac during the summer months and during the winter, she loved hosting craft parties with neighbourhood friends. Sandy was passionate about knitting and sewing and made countless items over the years that she donated to local charities. We’ll always laugh remembering how we used to call Sandy during football season - she wouldn’t answer the phone and if she did, it was an abrupt “can’t talk right now, Green Bay is playing!” Sandy was an avid sports fan with curling, hockey and football always on her television. Sandy was an exceptional woman and was always willing to try something new.
At 84 years young, and for the first time in her life, she organized a hockey playoff pool for her friends and fellow residents at Chartwell Isabella Retirement Residence. She was also involved in knitting and other group activities at Chartwell which she thoroughly enjoyed. Sandy’s laughter could be heard throughout the building as she spent time with her new found friends.
Sandy had a long and happy life and we’ll always wish for, “one more cup of coffee” and one more, “hello there young fella.” We love you mom and grandma.
We’d like to extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff and doctors at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and Toronto General Hospital. A heartfelt thank you as well to the team at Chartwell Isabella for their exceptional care and compassion.
A celebration of life will be held the afternoon of 19 August 2025 at the Slovak Legion, Thunder Bay in honour of both Mike and Sandy. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the MS Society of Canada or the Thunder Bay District Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.
