With heavy hearts but profound gratitude, we share the passing of Peter Lorne Shepstone—a courageous serviceman, devoted father, adoring husband, and cherished Poppa—who left this world embraced by the family he held dearest on May 2nd, 2025. Born on October 18, 1955, in Shelburne, Ontario, Peter was the son of Ronald and Audrey Shepstone. Growing up as the son of a minister, he traveled to many places, developing resilience, adaptability, and an abiding love of family—all virtues that defined his life.
At the age of 21, Peter answered the call to serve in the military, exemplifying steadfast bravery and commitment. His time in service showcased his remarkable discipline, honor, and dedication, and this chapter of his life laid the foundation for the strength and responsibility he carried into every role he embraced thereafter. His military experience was not only a testament to his courage but also a reflection of his deep sense of duty and loyalty.
Of all his life’s accomplishments, perhaps the most defining was the day he met Phyllis, the love of his life. Their connection was instant, a bond built on mutual respect, unwavering devotion, and endless affection. On March 24, 1979, Peter and Phyllis exchanged vows, beginning an extraordinary journey that would shape their legacy. Together, they crafted a home rich in laughter and love, raising eleven remarkable children and instilling in them the values of warmth, togetherness, and resilience. Phyllis was not just his wife but his partner in every sense—a steadfast source of encouragement, joy, and inspiration. Even after her passing in 2004, Phyllis’s spirit remained a guiding light for Peter and his family, an enduring presence that continued to inspire him.
In August 1980, Peter transitioned to working closer to home at the Great Lakes Forest Products Mill, later known as Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper. Despite the long, arduous hours, his heart was always with his family, offering them his unwavering love and presence at every opportunity. His children fondly remember competing for the privilege of sitting beside him after a hard day’s work—moments that underscored his deep devotion and the comfort he brought to their lives.
Peter also found immense joy in the outdoors, where his love for fishing and hunting flourished. His thrilling tales of adventures in nature were legendary, bonding family and friends through shared experiences and captivating stories of “the one that got away”. These passions connected him with the beauty of the world and the people he loved most.
Above all, Peter’s role as a Poppa brought him unparalleled pride and joy. His grandchildren were the light of his life—the brightest stars in his constellation of love. Every visit to Poppa’s house was a celebration of family, with laughter filling the air, stories being shared, and cherished memories being created. These treasured gatherings will remain cornerstones of his legacy, carried forward as the family’s living testament to his love.
Peter is lovingly remembered by his eleven children: Lorne, Audrey (Jason), Bernadette (Rory), Genevieve (Jeffery), Gerald (Madison), Ellen (David), Bohdan (Alysha), Victoria (Brian), Kathryn (Bradley), Alexandra (Aric), and Peter (Jessie). He also leaves behind his grandchildren—Emily, Mikalah, Julia, Andi, Ethan, Carter, Abigail, Marin, Lewis, Britton, David, Alec, Levi, Malcom, Fynn, Aila, Reed, Jack, Wyatt, Tessa, Flora, William, Stella, Amelia, and Lucy—who were his heart’s pride and joy. His siblings Wayne (Debra) Shepstone, Janet (Dan) Humphrey, and Bonnie (Leo) Hillen, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and relatives, will continue to carry his legacy forward. Peter is reunited in eternal peace with his wife Phyllis; grandson Korbin; parents Ronald and Audrey; and siblings Norman, Gerald, Helen, and John.
The family expresses their deep gratitude to the compassionate staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for their remarkable care during Peter’s final days.
Peter’s life was a symphony of courage, devotion, and love. From his service to his country to the extraordinary bond he shared with Phyllis and their family, Peter’s memory stands as a beacon of strength and inspiration. May his enduring legacy guide us all to live with the same valor and love that he so generously embodied.
