It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Verna Hagberg (nee Hytonen).
Born May 16, 1927 in Port Arthur, Ontario, she grew up in Shabaqua, moving back to the city at age 14 for work. She lived in and around the Bay Street area most of her life. Verna was always a “City Girl” at heart.
Verna worked hard her entire life, but enjoyed traveling. In later years, she loved going down to Grand Portage.
In the winter of 1949, while working at a bush camp, she met the love of her life, Charles Hagberg. They were happily married for 44 years.
Verna is survived by her nieces: Karen Parker, Dawn Hytonen, and Gina Flaherty; and her in-laws: Irma Hagberg, Arlene Maxwell, and Kenneth Hagberg.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; her parents, Hilma and Hjalmar Hytonen; her brother, Willy; her sister-in-law, Margaret; her sisters-in-law, Bertha Pudas, Helen Martunnen, and Anne Prime; her brothers-in-law, Fred, Walter, Leonard, and Art; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank all of the staff in the Emergency Department and on A2 who helped make her brief stay in the hospital comfortable.
As per Verna's wishes, there will be no funeral service.
When you think of Verna, have a cup of coffee and a piece of Pulla.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Everest Funeral Home, 299 Waverley Street, at Algoma.
