Mrs. Nora Elizabeth Kanate (nee Kenequanash), age 63 years and a member of North Caribou Lake First Nation, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital in Thunder Bay on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

Nora was born on January 25, 1961 in Weagamow Lake, Ontario. She met Colin Kanate and they were married on December 20, 1988, building a beautiful life and family together. Nora worked for many years as the North Caribou Lake Welfare Administrator. She loved her job, helping those around her and making many friends along the way. She enjoyed watching movies, travelling and road trips and was artistic, especially when it came to beading. Nora's greatest passion was her family and grandchildren, always looking forward to time spent with them. She was a smart and loving woman, with a heart of gold and sincere kindness. She will be deeply missed by all of those who knew her.

Nora is survived by her husband of over 35 years, Colin; children Adam, Marsha (Randell) and Abigayle; grandchildren Juliana, Alakai, Cole, Jadrien, Alexis and Kaiya; sisters Charlotte (Don) Affleck, Jessie (Richard) Greer, Sandra (Bernie) Quequish, and Melissa Williams. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Clarissa Matawapit (Dwayne Anderson) and brother-in-law Jake Kanate (Ida Williams) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Juliet Kenequanash; brothers Zebulon Kenequanash and Morris Kenequanash; daughter-in-law Monica Kanate and brother-in-law Simon Williams.

A Wake Service for Nora will be held in Thunder Bay on Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.

Nora will then be transported home to North Caribou Lake First Nation on Monday where a Traditional 2 Day Wake will be held. The Funeral Service will be held in Weagamow Lake New Life Pentecostal Assembly on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at 12:00pm, officiated by Nora's husband, Pastor Colin Kanate. Burial will follow in the Weagamow Lake Community Cemetery.
