It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Hugh Arthur Sutton on August 20, 2023.

Hugh was the most loving husband, father, and grandfather -- completely dedicated to his family life -- while also being a devoted sportsman as well. Hugh was born and raised in Fort William. He worked his entire career for Thunder Bay Hydro until retirement. He also worked for a brief period at Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association.

On March 20, 1971, he married his soulmate, Marilyn, and recently they celebrated 52 wonderful years together. They raised two children, Joanna and Scott, who also raised four amazing grandchildren, his absolute greatest joys.

Hugh was always very active and devoted to sports. Growing up, he played hockey, baseball, and football. And throughout his life, Hugh went to the College gym each morning, rode his bike every Sunday, and golfed weekly. His most favourite role, however, was as “Papa”, watching his grandchildren participate in their activities and sporting events. He rarely missed these moments with them, being their greatest supporter. There was truly no one more excited about his kid’s or grandkid’s activities. When he wasn't coaching from the sidelines, Hugh was rarely not firmly in his seat, cheering everyone on.

Hugh is lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife, Marilyn, his children Joanna (Mark) and Scott (Candace) Sutton as well as his biggest fans, his grandchildren Kallem and Brysen Beaucage and Malia and Arianna Sutton. He is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and countless dear friends.

Hugh was predeceased by his parents Dorothy and O.J. Sutton, his sister Carol Anne MacDonald and sister-in-laws, Linda Bruley and Betsy Rogers.

The family would like to thank the kind hearts who responded quickly to Hugh and to the first responders as well for attending to him. We cannot be more grateful.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, in the chapel of Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street. Those wishing to attend the service virtually may do so at the Sargent and Son Facebook page. Interment to follow at Mountainview Cemetery. Donations in Hugh’s memory may be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Online condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com.
