Heimo Halonen of Terrace Bay passed away suddenly on August 18, 2023 in the arms of his wife at home outside in the sunshine. He was 81 years old.

Heimo was born and grew up in Leppavirta, Finland. He immigrated to Canada as a young man and worked in logging in British Columbia and Northern Ontario, eventually settling in Ontario for good. He loved hunting, trapping and fishing and had many tales to tell. He also loved music and was playing trumpet in the Longlac Community Band when Karen Dusk joined the band to play accordion. They married less than a year later. When Heimo was in his 70’s, he taught himself to play piano. He was also an incredible artist, painting in acrylics, oils and watercolours. He loved the glamour and the glitz of Las Vegas and his game of choice was live keno. He and Karen made many happy trips to Las Vegas and then to the casinos in the Michigan UP in their later years.

Heimo is survived by his wife Karen, three sisters: Anja Thitz (Paavo, deceased), Annikki Itkonen (Taisto), Airi Mastomaki (Erkki) and two brothers: Aaro (Lea) and Ilmari (Toini). Several nieces and nephews also survive, and a step-granddaughter, Amanda.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother Risto; nephews, Eric and John and step son, Allan.

Cremation has taken place and as per Heimo’s wishes there will be no service.
