Greta Stiletto (nee Nyman), age 87 years of Thunder Bay, passed away suddenly of natural causes in her residence at Southbridge Pinewood on Sunday, March 3, 2024. She was born in Fort William on July 30, 1936 to Dirk and Olive Nyman.

Greta lived her childhood in Upsala, Ontario where she had the benefit of a close-knit community with her immediate family, grandparents, numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. When her younger sister June was high school age, Greta and June ventured to Thunder Bay to attend school. They would return home in the summer and weekends from time to time, even hitchhiking on one occasion so as not to miss the dance in Upsala.

In 1958, after working for a year as a teacher in Raith, Ontario, Greta saved enough money to embark on a trip to Holland where she met her father's family and spent the summer. When she got off the plane, her aunt was shocked to see the young lady had made the trip alone. This trip fuelled a lifetime of stories. Graduating from Business College, Greta was a Bookkeeper until marrying Mario Stiletto and starting a family in 1964. She was a “stay at home Mom” and took great pride in raising two sons, and providing a loving and supporting environment for her family.

When her kids were “old enough”, Mom returned to work as a Tax Preparer, and then at the Ministry of Colleges and Universities as a Clerk, from where she retired in 2002.

Greta had many interests, but none more than her family and gardening. She adored being a grandmother and never missed an opportunity to see her grandkids or attend their functions. As a gardener, she had an enormously green thumb and worked tirelessly to produce the most beautiful gardens. Greta was an endearing, strong willed, independent person who took great pride in her family and held friends dear.

Greta is survived by her sons Chris (Catherine) and Greg (Kelli); sister June Williams (Ken) and grandchildren Rebecca, Alyssa, Michael and Jacob. She was predeceased by her husband Mario and her parents, Dirk and Olive Nyman.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Pinewood Court for the care they provided over this past year.

Funeral Services for the late Greta Stiletto will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 1:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time.

Should friends so desire, donations can be made in memory of Greta to the Arthritis Society of Canada or the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation – Northern Cancer Fund.
