It is with great sadness, that the family of George Monkhouse announces his passing peacefully at home on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
George was born in Owen Sound, Ont. on October 10, 1928. Later moved to Port Arthur in 1946. In 1958, he married Margaret (Tweedie) and had 4 children: Brian, Karen (Jorma), Cheryl, Lori (Kevin), 4 grandchildren: Alex, Michael (Aaron), Melissa (Jonathan), Sandra (Miles), 2 great grandsons: Jameson and Dresden.
As a young man, George worked as a scaler for Abitibi-Cameron Falls, a fireman on the locomotives for CN Rail, and lastly joined the Port Arthur Police Department until amalgamation to the Thunder Bay Police Department becoming in charge of the Youth Division until retirement in 1988. During this time, he also ran 2 service stations with Ultramar Canada at Grandview Mall and on Oliver Road.
During George’s life, he was involved with the Senior Little League Baseball becoming an Umpire, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 5 and the Northwestern Ontario Sports Foundation’s Peace Garden’s Athletic Camp, The Loyal Order of the Moose and Ontario Moose Association becoming a lifetime member and holding the highest degree as a Pilgrim, and also a member of the Masonic Temple- Shuniah Lodge. George was also a member of the St. Stephen’s Church and Current River Recreation Centre, hosting a lot of fundraising events.
Throughout his life, George and his wife Margaret, continued to enjoy travelling with the Roving Motel (aka RV) for all Moose and pleasure excursions that all lined up with MLB stadiums in their paths. His other passion was with their second home in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic sharing good times and Presidente Beers with friends and family. His other interests in sports were with the Thunder Bay Border Cats, Lakehead University Thunderwolves Hockey, Calgary Stampeders and Green Bay Packers. Every day at 2pm George would visit the local Hodder Avenue Robin’s for a coffee and learn how to solve the world’s problems with the brew crew!
His family was a huge part of his life, spending time with the grandkids while they were playing hockey, soccer, baseball, and travelling to tournaments to be their biggest fan, which kept him busy.
George is predeceased by his parents William and Lena, wife Margaret, sister Helen Byers, brother Gerald. He is survived by brother William (Bill), sister-in-law Arlene Nolan as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

As per George’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family inurnment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Wednesday, June 18 from 1pm – 4 pm at Current River Recreation Centre. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Stephen’s Church, Current River Recreation Centre or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
