Benoit Desjardins 1931-2025 Il n’y a qu’un bonheur dans la vie, c’est d’aimer et d’être aimé.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Benoît Desjardins, who died on July 15, 2025, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 93.
Benoit was the devoted husband of Mrs. Bertha Lebel and a loving father to their children, sharing 53 years of marriage filled with love. He was the son of the late Alphonse Desjardins and the late Marie-Marthe Roy.
Mr. Desjardins resided in Port Colborne for a large part of his life, spending his last 10 years in Thunder Bay.
Benoit led a diverse and passionate career, as a chef, where he dedicated his talents to the culinary arts. Long before he was married, in the 1950s, he began his maritime journey. During those years, he sailed the coastal waters of the Caribbean, visiting exotic locales.
Subsequently, he became a true Great Lakes mariner, dedicating his career to shipping from 1960 until his retirement at 63. He sailed on notable vessels such as the Menihak Lake and the Carol Lake for Carryore Ltd. until 1987. His path then led him to Misener Transportation Ltd., and finally, to ships with Canada Steamship Lines.
Beyond his professional life, Benoit was deeply involved in his Francophone community. He dedicated his time and energy to serving the members and supporting the parish of Saint-Jean-de-Brébeuf Church.
Mr. Benoît Desjardins is survived by his children: Lucie (Sylvain Noury), Carole (Steven Zawacki), Linda (Bert Kuizenga); his grandchildren: Gabrielle, Camille, Timothy, Kerston, Morgan, and his 5 great-grandchildren, as well as his brother and sister: Jeannine, Jacques-Emmanuel, and the families of those who preceded them.
He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, and many friends who accompanied him throughout his journey.
Benoit is also survived by his dear friends, Lorraine Soucie and Mae Marchand, who were very precious to him.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held at a later date in September 2025 at the Conmee Township Cemetery, where Benoit will rest beside his beloved wife Bertha.
