Woman died after falling into medical distress in police custody

KENORA — A person who fell into medical distress while in the custody of the Ontario Provincial Police died Sunday afternoon in Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit, a provincial agency, confirmed the death of a 46-year-old woman Wednesday, three days after OPP issued an initial release about the case.

The SIU said she was arrested by OPP in Kenora at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, on an outstanding warrant, and lodged in a cell at the local detachment.

Early Sunday morning, she went into medical distress.

First aid was administered, and paramedics took her to hospital where she was placed on a ventilator.

The woman was pronounced deceased shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Three investigators and two forensic specialists have been assigned to the case by the SIU.

It is an independent agency that looks into the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
