SIOUX LOOKOUT— The municipality of Sioux lookout has filled the vacancy on its governing council.
Darlene Angeconeb will fill the position as of August 13, according to a media release issued Monday.
“I am honoured to serve the role of municipal councillor,” she is quoted as saying.
Angeconeb has served on the municipal truth and reconciliation committee for the past 10 years, and as the Chair of the Police Services Board (now the Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment Board) for the past five years.
She was also the recipient of the Sioux Lookout Rotary Club’s Jack MacKenzie Award in 2021, in recognition of selfless dedication to the community and its people.
“Darlene will be a great addition to Council,” said Mayor Doug Lawrance.
“She has been actively engaged with municipal committees and boards for over a decade, now she will have even greater opportunities to shape the future of our community as a Councillor.”
The seat became vacant after former councillor Luc Beaulne resigned for personal reasons on June 25.
Under Ontario’s Municipal Act, council had 60 days after the seat was declared vacant to either appoint a new councillor or call a by-election.
The cost of a by-election would be approximately $35,000, said the municipality in its release, and with just over a year remaining in the current council term, filling the vacancy by appointment was the most cost-effective option.
When council decides to appoint a person to a vacant council seat, the appointee must consent to the appointment and must be eligible to hold office.
At the direction of council, Lawrance and CAO and Clerk Brian MacKinnon met with Angeconeb, who has accepted the appointment to the vacant seat.
Angeconeb will commence her new role as councillor on August 13 immediately after the oath of office is administrated to her.
