NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO — A small change in call volume for provincial police in the Northwest region.
Officers with OPP detachments across Dryden, Kenora, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake and Rainy River answered 1,554 calls during their most recent reporting period of May 12 to 18.
That's a decline of less than a 10 per cent compared to the week of April 21. Due to staff availability, complete data was not made available by the OPP for the period between April 28 to May 11.
The Kenora detachment saw the highest number of incidents, 374, and Red Lake was next with 313 calls reported.
Community services, eTickets, police assistance and for Liquor Licence Control Act incidents topped the list of reasons for the calls.
When it comes to any charges, officers laid 603 during this time, with the most being issued in Dryden, 262, and Red Lake, 147.
Dryden OPP issued 243 Highway Traffic Act charges and 19 criminal charges. In comparison, Officers in Red Lake issued 108 road-related offences and 39 criminal charges.
The OPP is reminding the public about its online reporting system — citizen self-reporting — which can be used as an alternative to having an officer attend a scene for minor incidents and crimes.
