WAPEKEKA — Ontario Provincial Police say they’re investigating the cause of a fire that engulfed the youth centre in Wapekeka where a man was recently killed by police.

An OPP spokesperson told Newswatch they were notified about the blaze around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 17. Police also confirmed the fire was at the youth centre, which is also used as a courtroom for fly-in court in the remote First Nation.

It was the same building where Tyresse Roundsky, 23, was shot and killed by police while allegedly armed with a knife on July 30.

Nobody was inside the building when the fire happened, OPP said and no one was hurt in the blaze.

Community fire crews responded to fight the fire, police said.

Wapekeka is about 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
