It has been a long time since I have written a column.

Hello, my name is Sarah Desforges; the 20-something former newspaper writer of Ear Falls, and I am BACK, baby.

Some of you in town may remember me from my time at The Northern Sun newspaper, writing articles and my Life on Wheels column.

For those of you  who don’t know me, allow me to tell you a little about the woman behind the keyboard. I am a part of the Red Lake, Ont. community; I have lived in Ear Falls for about eight years now. I moved to town after getting married. My new husband's job moved its office to Ear Falls that year, and I found the sweetest little house for sale across the street. We were about to welcome a baby boy into our lives. Everything was perfect.

But life never really is perfect.

I have lived my whole life with a physical disability, Charcot Marie Tooth, and during my pregnancy, that disability turned my body against me. I became so weak; I couldn’t even get out of bed by myself. My husband lost his job, we couldn’t make ends meet, and we had to rely on our friends and family for support. Ear Falls was there for us.

My husband got a new job, and I started to get stronger. Nowhere near where I once was physically, but at least capable of being alone with my perfect son. I had even started working a couple of little part-time jobs, including my writing gig. And life was alright.

And then the newspaper got sold, I lost my other jobs, my husband left, COVID hit and my world was shattered.

I was strong because I had to be; because I had a little boy to be strong for, and I had a house to run. Each day I found ways to keep the pain away and keep pushing through life.

And that saying, fake it till you make it? It absolutely works.

I am now a college graduate, a full-time mom to the greatest kid...I even learned how to cook, financially stable, peacefully co-parenting with my ex, and have found the kindest man to start anew with.

And I get to write again!

My life has definitely had its ups and downs, but, hasn’t everyone’s? I have loved writing my stories for everyone to read in the past, and I am absolutely thrilled to get to write them for you again.

So, enjoy my ups, enjoy my downs, enjoy all of my ridiculous spins on the mundanities of life.

I am very happy to meet you.
