We are local: Tanvir Sajib

Tanvir is a platform and traffic administrator, mostly responsible for the operational and maintenance perspective of Newswatch websites.

“I'm in charge of keeping Newswatch running smoothly from both an operational and maintenance perspective. Operations mean making sure everything is where it should be, working closely with reporters, and ensuring the site functions exactly as expected.”

“Maintenance involves troubleshooting when needed, but also coming up with fresh ideas and improvements that make Newswatch more convenient — not just for our readers, but for the reporters as well.”

Tanvir could also be referred to as a web developer and programmer.

He studied at Lakehead University, graduating with a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, which covers what he does at Dougall Media, and then some.

Tanvir started part time at Dougall Media in 2023 and moved into his full-time position in September 2024.

The reporters and sales executives work in total synergy with Tanvir.

“They know what to expect from me, and I do my best to meet those expectations. The communication is truly a two-way street, and the Newswatch team and sales crew — honestly, they’re just wonderful at it.”

Tanvir is originally from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

He likes the weather in Thunder Bay better, in the summertime.

“When it’s summer here, the weather is just incredible. It’s not too hot — I can handle 38 degrees with no problem — but 15 to 18 degrees? That’s perfect.”

In Dhaka, Tanvir would spend between a half hour and an hour and a half in traffic each day, and he doesn’t have to deal with that here in Thunder Bay.

Ending up in Thunder Bay was a stroke of luck.

“I could have ended up in either Thunder Bay or Windsor — but Lakehead University accepted me first, so that’s where I went. Looking back, I’m glad it turned out this way.”

“After finishing my studies, I moved into a full-time role as a platform traffic administrator. I enjoy this city for so many reasons, especially how peaceful and uncrowded it is.”

“I've developed connections over the years and I like to volunteer in activities. Thunder Bay has given me a lot of opportunities and that’s why it means so much to me.”

Tanvir volunteered for the Thunder Bay Literacy Group, helping elderly people with computer skills and IT skills.

He also serves as an elected executive board member of the Bangladeshi Association of Thunder Bay, a local charitable organization. In his role as Secretary of Media and Public Relations, Tanvir helps amplify the group’s voice, build community connections, and promote cultural engagement in the community.

Playing chess is something he also loves to spend time doing.

He plays with the Thunder Bay Chess Club on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, and loves to be involved in tournaments.

When he’s not at work, volunteering or playing chess, gardening is something you may find Tanvir doing.

If Tanvir had a stretch of free time with no obligations, he’d head deep into the wilderness for a full seven days — completely unplugged, embracing nature in its purest form.

“I just want to disconnect and immerse myself in the wilderness — no cell phone, no internet — just a week of pure nature.”
