It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father, Stephen George Hurst, aged 61. He passed away on October 21, 2024, in Thunder Bay. Born on September 25, 1963, Stephen was a vibrant presence known for his infectious sense of humor and ability to brighten any room he was in. But beyond that, he was an amazing person-kind, generous, and full of life. He spent a significant portion of his career at Bombardier (Alstom), dedicating 25 years to the company.
Stephen was a beloved family man, survived by his daughter Alexandra Hurst (Dan Vaillant), grandsons Mason and Benjamin Vaillant, mother Diana Hurst, sister Debbie Hurst (Mario Lachaine), and brother Gary Hurst. He was a graduate of Selkirk High School and carried his love for learning and connection into all aspects of his life.
A true enthusiast of life's simple pleasures, Stephen enjoyed watching hockey and football, gardening, cooking, and embracing the great outdoors through fishing and camping.
Stephen's laughter, energy, and unconditional love for his family and friends will be deeply missed and forever cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Words from Ali:
My dad was the kind of person who could light up any room with his infectious sense of humor and larger-than-life personality. He had an amazing ability to make everyone laugh, often with a witty remark or a perfectly timed joke that made even the most ordinary moments feel special. His love for his family was boundless, always showing up when we needed him with open arms and a warm heart. Whether he was cracking a joke at a family gathering or dancing at a party, he was truly the life of the party, bringing joy and energy wherever he went. His laughter and love will always be a cherished part of who he was. My sons and I will miss my dad more than words can express. He was not only a father and grandfather but a constant source of love, wisdom, and support in our lives. The hole left by his absence will be felt in every moment, and though we will carry his memory in our hearts, nothing will fill the space he leaves behind. A celebration of life will be held at the Wayland on November 23rd starting at 2pm, where loved ones will gather to honor his memory through shared stories and laughter, much like he would have wanted.
