It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, “Nonno” and “Bisnonno”, Silvio Gorenszach at the age of 91 years old.

Silvio was born on December 22, 1932 in Savogna Italy. He was raised in Montemaggiore, Matajur, a little village in the Province of Udine, Italy’s most North-Eastern region.

Silvio was one of many to immigrate to Canada in 1956. He settled in Thunder Bay and worked hard to build a better life for his family. Initially, he worked in bush camps before working in his vocation as a bricklayer for Fred Barbini Ltd.

In 1983, Silvio was diagnosed with Scleroderma and almost died from the disease. He amazingly recovered but could no longer work. Contracting the disease was almost a blessing as he then had time to enjoy his passions in life: hunting for moose, fishing, gardening and picking blueberries.

Silvio was a member of the Alpini Thunder Bay and Da Vinci Center. He enjoyed picnics with his friends at locations off of Spruce River Road, Trowbridge Falls and Government Road which included one of his favourite pastimes, bocce.

Survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Luciana and their children Franco (Leanne) Gorenszach, Sylvia (Darren) Gorenszach; grandchildren Anthony (Danielle) Gorenszach, Tyler and Breanna Watts, Tracey (Sam) Maki, Kayla Boland (Iain), great grandchildren Jack and Cash Maki, Noah Gorenszach; brother Lino, sister Livia and many nephews, nieces and cousins in Italy, Canada and Australia.

He was predeceased by his son, Paolo Gorenszach and siblings in Italy and Australia.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the amazing nurses in 1A and 2B at the TBRHSC.

Services to celebrate Silvio's life and legacy will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, April 16, 2024 in St. Anthony's Church, 123 Hilldale Road, with Funeral Mass celebrated by Reverend Luigi Filippini. Visitation with family will be held 1 hour prior to the service at 9:00 am. A private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Northern Cancer Fund or St. Anthony's Church are welcomed.

Services will be live streamed and can be viewed on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFBYazicpnc
