Julia Marie Garner, age 86, passed away peacefully at St. Josephs Transitional Care on February 19th, 2023. Born on December 10th, 1936, Julia grew up with eight siblings in Franz, Ontario, later moving to Thunder Bay at the age of 18.

She started her 20-year career as a cook at the Scandinavian Home, and finished her career as a supervisor at the Marine Room, in Eaton’s. She had met her love Rune Jonsson in 1960, and had their son Gary in 1964.

Julia had an amazing ability to make everyone feel loved and cared for, willing to drop anything to help anyone at a moment’s notice. Once her grandchildren were born, it was very clear that they became the centre of her universe. Watching them play hockey and baseball, taking them on adventures and spending every minute she could with them.

When she wasn’t with her family, you could find her in her earlier days playing bingo with her sister, making long-distance phone calls to talk to her friend Idina Vilas, in Portugal and in more recent years, out walking or having coffee with her great friend Gail Menzies.

She is predeceased by her parents: Sophie Tangie and Maurice Laroche, brothers: Art, Emile, Leonard and Edward, and sisters: Jane, Mabel, Albina and Jackie.

Left to cherish her memory is her son Gary, grandchildren Kyler, Kadan and Avery, and close family and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel; for those who wish to view the service online, you may do so at the Sargent & Son Facebook page. Interment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
