Mr. John Anthony Grgurich, age 93 years, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Care Group on Monday, June 5, 2023.
 
Born in Port Arthur on October 24, 1929, he was the son of John and Frances Grgurich.  John attended St. Theresa School and graduated from Port Arthur Technical and Commercial High School.  A machinist by trade he worked at Dingwells Machine Shop and Ontario Hydro.  In 1959 he started AMCO Machine Co. which he owned and operated with his wife Liisa for 37 years, retiring in 1986.  He took great pride in his work and was well known for his meticulous attention to detail.  John was a part of numerous pit crews during the days of stock car racing at the Lakehead Exhibition Grounds.   He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycles, snowmobiling, and traveling with his wife, 3 daughters Joni, Julie and Jennifer and in later years with many dear friends.  He met the love his life, Liisa Ijas at a dance in 1952 and they were married in Our Lady of Loretto Church in 1955, sharing in 68 years of marriage.  A man of strong faith, John was a life member of the church that he helped to build, Our Lady of Loretto Parish, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was always ready and willing to lend a hand and to share his knowledge with his friends, his girls and grandchildren, teaching them how to repair things around the house and how to care for their vehicles.
 
John will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife Liisa, daughters: Joni Schnieders (Bert Viljakainen), Julie Grgurich (Ed Kolodziejczak) and Jennifer Sargent (Michael); grandchildren: Whitney Dallaire (Derek), Lauren Schnieders (Ben Daniar), Jamie Grgurich (Ryan Hampshire), Dillon Grgurich (Lindsey Gutmann), Danielle Sargent (Bailey Brown), Nicholas Sargent and Jayden Bilyk; great grandchildren Alexander Hampshire and Beckett Daniar as well as by nieces, nephews and dear friends.  He was predeceased by his parents John and Frances Grgurich, sisters Sophie Rasporich, Mary Wyer, Frances Grgurich, brother Walter Grgurich, baby daughter in infancy and son-in-law Bernie Schnieders.
 
The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to all of the amazing caregivers who provided such comfort to John and family over the last few months with special thanks to Dr. Migay, Dr. Feldstein and all of the wonderful nurses and support staff on 4-North at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
 
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 12th, 2023 when family and friends will gather in Our Lady of Loretto R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry.  Memorial visitation will be held in the church for 1 hour prior to service time.  The interment will take place in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.  As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Our Lady of Loretto Elevator Fund or the charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.  The service will be available on livestream via the Sargent & Son Facebook page.
