February 20,1929 – August 26,2025
With deep sadness we announce the passing of our cherished mother, Elizabeth, on August 26, 2025, at the age of 96. Mom’s warmth, wisdom, and gentle spirit touched all who knew her. She departs this life leaving a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering strength—her memory forever etched in the hearts of family and friends.
Elizabeth was born in New York City, USA, on February 20, 1929, to Bourdon Veazey and Dr. Albert E. Casey. Elizabeth, a.k.a. Betty, was a good student, participating in many school and community programs--winning a community appreciation award before graduating to high school. She attended Birmingham Southern College, Birmingham, Alabama, during which time she met Clement Kent of Charleston, South Carolina. Instant soulmates, she married Clem at 19, and they shared 72 loving years.
Elizabeth earned certification in phlebotomy and later attained a master’s degree in biology. When our family moved from the US to Thunder Bay, Ontario, she attended LU’s Faculty of Education, and taught English as a second language to children and adults. Elizabeth lived to learn, but was always there for her family, while continuing voluntary community service.
Her gentle soul was also assertive and tough. Whether steaming off old wallpaper in a heatwave, or actively helping build a log home in the country, or sewing patchwork quilts, Elizabeth was not afraid to wield the tools.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents and sister, and her husband in 2020. She is survived by two brothers, Gene and Paul Casey, her children, Clement (Leena), Annie (Peter), Gene (Karen) and grandchildren Travis (Holly), Jesse, Emma (Brendan) and Leila (James), as well as a great-grandson, Liam. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
Though our hearts grieve her loss, Elizabeth leaves behind many cherished memories. We find comfort in knowing she is at peace, and honor her by living with the strength and courage she embodied every day.
Mom was loved by many. We hope her memory will be a blessing to each and every one of them. As we say farewell, we hold close the lessons she taught us and the love she shared. She will be remembered with a deep and abiding love. May she Rest in Peace reunited with those who’ve gone before.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Southbridge Roseview for their care of Elizabeth over the past three years, with special thanks to Lynn Mckenzie (DSW), Diana Vecchio, Respite Caregiver, Marie from Hospice Northwest and Kenny, PSW, Roseview.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Sick Kids Hospital, Toronto, and/or the MS Society of Canada would be appreciated.
Cremation has taken place and a service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street with Rev.
