It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Hermano Tavares Melo. Surrounded by family, he peacefully passed at age 92. Hermano is survived by Maria, his loving wife of 69 years. He leaves behind his three sons: Ilidio (Lucilia) Armando (Mary), George (Anna);  his grandchildren:  David (Maria), Jennifer (Tyler), Jesse, Chelsea and Sophie. His six great grandchildren Sebastian, Oliver, Theodore, Aidan, and the twins, Kieran and Cassidy. He was preceded by his parents, Jose Tavares Melo and Maria Espirito Santo Baptista,  brothers Jose and Manuel, nephews Henrique and Jorge.

Hermano was born on May 22, 1931 in Agua de Pau, Azores. He immigrated to Canada in 1958 with dreams of a new life to start a family. Dad was a hard-working man who worked tirelessly in order to bring his family to join him. In the spring of 1962, the family was finally reunited in Port Arthur.

Hermano worked hard and settled on becoming a journeyman glazier with various companies until he finally retired with Frontier Glass. His carpentry skills were shown when he built their new home in which he lived for the past 52 years. Hermano was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his camp out on Lake Kashabowie. His passion for gardening was his greatest pastime. Every spring, he would enjoy planting his garden with the skills he learned and every fall, there would be a bounty of vegetables which he would always share with friends and neighbors. He was a devoted Catholic and a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church.

A special thanks to TBRHSC Cancer Unit and Dr. Haggerty and special thanks to Dr. DelPaggio for his amazing work and compassion. We also thank Dr. Stuart Kennedy for his many years as his GP and nurses of ParaMed especially Madilyn for her care.

As per Hermano’s wishes, a service will be held at Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 7th with visitation for friends one hour prior. Entombment will be at St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to TBRHSC Cancer Unit.
