It is with heavy hearts that the family of Geraldine “Sloka” Zeleny announces her passing on May 17, 2023 at age 92.

Born on June 12, 1930 in Truskavets, Ukraine, she came to live in Thunder Bay and for the past five years had resided in Nipigon. She was a longtime member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Transfiguration, the Catholic Women’s League, and the Ukrainian Catholic Church Choir in Thunder Bay. She enjoyed the social part of making perogies and cabbage rolls in the basement of her church. When she was able, she loved to travel, and her adventures were made sweeter when she had a friend or her daughter Irene and her family to accompany her. Most of all, Mom loved to just hold and rock her grandchildren, and feed them until they couldn’t eat another bite! She took great joy in her role as an adoring baba and prababa.

She is lovingly remembered by her two sons: Walter (Noreen) of Kakabeka, ON and Michael (Lisa) of Nipigon, ON; grandchildren: Shannon Joblin (Rob), Michael Podgorski (Tamara), Katherine Ulak (Edwin), Mark Podgorski (Kristen), Steven Zeleny (Natasha), Erin Zeleny, Eric Zeleny, Taylor Zeleny, and Olivia Zeleny; great-grandchildren: Maggie, Stella, Arthur, Yvette, Vivienne, Maeve, Florence, and Felix; and brother Peter Delski.

She was predeceased by her husband Mike, daughter Irene, sisters Christine Praymak and Elizabeth Maley, and parents Karoline and Michel Delski.

Sincere gratitude to Laurel Kemp, Carolyn Antaya and the LTC Nursing Staff at Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, Dr. Thacker, Dr. Scott and Fr. Henryk Augustynowicz.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 24, at 12:00 p.m., at Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, with interment at Mountain View Cemetery. The funeral mass will be livestreamed via Sargent & Son’s Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to the Nipigon Memorial District Hospital – Long Term Care Unit.
