FORT FRANCES—With hazardous winter conditions expected in the region due to a winter storm warning, Fort Frances Fire Rescue Services, put out an emergency preparedness notice for all residents.

Environment Canada has put out a winter storm warning for the area and which is expected to bring with it 30 to 50 centimetres of snow. The storm is expected to begin Wednesday and continue into Friday. In an effort to help keep all residents safe, FFFRS shared this emergency preparedness notice.

They encourage all residents to talk with their family members to ensure everyone knows where the emergency kit is kept and what to do in an emergency.

For assistance with building an emergency kit or an emergency plan they listed several links. These include:

FFFRS suggests that residents should add warm clothes and blankets to their emergency kit, to bring their pets inside during cold weather, and to stay connected to radio, TV, or online for updates.  Residents can also call their Fire Rescue Service department.

Guidelines for an emergency preparedness kit include:

  • Extra warm clothing and blankets, water, food that won’t spoil, battery powered flashlight, and extra batteries
  • First aid kit and other medical supplies
  • Contact phone numbers for each member of the family and at least two out of town contacts
  • A list of emergency numbers

It is also important to think about anyone with special needs, seniors, pets or neighbours who may need help.
