RAINY RIVER FIRST NATIONS – Vandalism has impeded progress in a local water treatment plant upgrade.
There is “evidence of tampering” at the site of new community wells, the public works department of Rainy River First Nations reported in a letter posted Tuesday on Facebook.
Well caps were found removed and “food waste and other garbage” was in the vicinity, stated the letter signed by public works manager Kyle Kellar.
That vandalism means well testing – “a crucial part of the water treatment plant upgrade” – will have to be delayed, the letter explained.
Kellar also expressed concern about “potential contamination” from the garbage and possible structural damage at the well site.
“Our team has secured the site and is assessing the extent of the damage,” his letter stated, adding an investigation is being conducted to determine who committed the vandalism.
Calls and emails to the public works department were not returned on Wednesday.
