Update: Road work continues on East Melick and Essex Road. Evacuees are returning home

Due to the lack of precipitation, evacuees living south of the Porter bridge were able to return to their homes.

KENORA – Progress continues in Kenora as the water levels decline, allowing road crews to commence construction on East Melick and Essex Road.

Six days after East Melick Road was closed at Essex Road, residents along Portier bridge and southerly on East Melick Road were advised to evacuate.

On May 20, the road closure was removed, and evacuees who live on Victoria Crescent, Decemvir Drive, Bell Point Road, and residents to the east of this area, south of the Portier bridge, could return to their property safely.

Although Black Sturgeon Lake is still flowing into the Winnipeg River, city officials remain cautious as water levels are predicted to increase over the next several days.

Restoration is still in progress on Railway Street, west of the Sixteenth Avenue North crossing. First Avenue South between Third Street South and Fourth Street South is also closed.

The city still provides sandbags available at Fire Station 1, 100 Fourteenth Street North. There is also sand available just down from the Fire Station on Fourteenth Street North on the north side of the street near the Operations Centre.

The Emergency Control Group meets daily to evaluate the rising waters and flood damage to focus road crews on which location is in need.
