KENORA — Two provincial police officers have been charged for their actions while making an arrest last Boxing Day.
The OPP's professional standards unit on Tuesday announced that provincial constables Karl Ranta and Alexander McEachern have each been charged with assault after responding to an incident on Matheson Street in Kenora on Dec. 26, 2022.
Police said the officers were called to disturbance, with reports that a paramedic had been assaulted.
The incident had ended by the time officers arrived, but they approached an individual to make an arrest when a struggle ensued. That individual was charged with assault and resisting arrest, but the second count has since been withdrawn.
Police began investigating the conduct of the officers in January, which led to one being suspended with pay and the other being placed on modified duties.
Ranta has been an OPP officer for nearly four years, while McEachern has been an officer for just less than two years. Both have been suspended with pay.
They are expected to appear in a Kenora court next month.
The allegations have yet to be tested in court.
