Two American hunters have been fined a combined $17,000 and issued five-year hunting licence suspensions after shooting at a deer decoy north of Kenora in 2019.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry announced the penalties in a Friday news release.

The two hunters, both from Vermont, were convicted of careless use of a firearm. One was fined $9,000, while the other was fined $8,000.

Conservation officers were conducting a deer decoy operation on Cygnet Lake Road north of Kenora on Nov. 5, 2019, when a vehicle stopped and the two men stood on the road and shot at the deer decoy.

Both men had their firearms forfeited to the Crown and are required to complete the province's hunter education course before being able to purchase another licence.
