KENORA – People near the Manitoba border might want to think twice about going out on the highways Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Environment Canada put out a travel advisory Wednesday morning for an area including Red Lake and Kenora, where it was predicted that peak snowfall rates of more than two centimetres per hour would reduce visibility in late afternoon or early evening.

The vexing weather system is “coming up from the Dakotas, moving northwards,” Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson told Newswatch.

“It’s expected to spread into the Lake of the Woods area during the afternoon hours and up into Red Lake by late afternoon or early evening,” he added.

“It’s basically a pretty standard system that we get at this time of year,” he remarked.

“I guess the concern being as it moves into Lake of the Woods and the Red Lake area there could be brief periods of time where the snow falls relatively heavily before ending overnight in the Kenora area and first thing on Thursday morning for the Red Lake area.

“We’re not expecting huge amounts of snowfall from it – roughly somewhere in the range of five to 10 centimetres.”

Environment Canada’s seven-day forecast (as of noon Wednesday) for Kenora includes snow Wednesday, a chance of flurries on Thursday and sunny above-zero weather on Sunday.
