Tickets are selling fast for Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame

Inductees include NHL’s Danny Johnson, top ten ranked swimmer Kelly Lyons and special Olympian Danny Smith.

2022 Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame on the evening of Aug. 13 at La Place Rendezvous.

FORT FRANCES – Three athletes, four builders, and two teams are set to be inducted into the 2022 Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame on the evening of Aug. 13 at La Place Rendezvous.

Tickets for the ceremony and banquet are available for purchase at Taggs Source for Sport. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased by cash or cheque.

Among the prestigious athletes being inducted into the hall of fame this year is Danny Johnson, who began his career playing minor league hockey with the Flin Flon Bomber, the Fort Frances Royals, and the Brandon Wheat Kings before being signed to the Toronto Maple Leaf's farm team the Tusla Oilers.

Afterward, he was drafted to the Vancouver Canucks in 1970 of which he was part of the team’s inaugural season in the NHL.

Later, Johnson would play three seasons in the World Hockey Association for the Winnipeg Jets before retiring.

Another prominent inductee is Kelly Lyons, who at the age of 57 set three provincial records in swimming in 2020. Her records include the 1:07.43 in the 100m free swim, 2:27.46 in the 200m free swim and 6:33.63 in the 500m free swim.   

Danny Smith has a renowned 21-year career in Special Olympics, from 1991-2012 competing in a variety of sports, including baseball, track and field, curling, cross-country skiing, floor hockey, 10-pin bowling, 5-pin bowling, and swimming.

In the Builders category, Doug Egan coached minor hockey for 37 years and was one of the leaders in the Ice for Kids Arena Campaign. The Fort Frances Curling Club Committee between 1991-1993 built the new curling club on Eighth Street, the late Herman Guimond, who coached and play hockey for Fort Frances and the Couchiching First Nation, from the 1940’s to the 1980’s, and Terry Ogden who coached the Muskies Hockey Team to 5 provincial medals, three silver medals and coached Fort Frances High School to their first 2-gold medals in 1986 and1989.

Two Teams will also be entering the Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame.

1989 Canadian Gold Medalists Plaza Lanes Bantam Girl’s Bowling Team who are the first "young lady bowlers" to be nominated, and 1986 Provincial Gold Medalists Fort Frances High School Muskie Hockey Team.
