THUNDER BAY – On May 4, Lakehead Region Conservation Authority released a statement regarding the Neebing-Mcintyre floodway having to divert water for the first time in five years due to the high levels of flowing water along the rivers.

In an update, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is recording high water flows in the Kaministiquia River, which is expected to continue to rise over the weekend. The statement reads that “widespread flooding is not anticipated; however, fast-flowing water and flooding in low-lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood-prone areas.”

The public is advised to pay attention to local forecasts and exercise caution while travelling around the waterways. The high flowing water may have eroded the embankment causing unstable conditions, and never drive through a flooded road.  Parents and caregivers are also advised to keep children away from all waterways and discuss the hazards of swimming in cold, fast-flowing water.
