Teens assault police after fleeing in stolen vehicle

Ontario Provincial Police have arrested a pair of youth and charged them with multiple offences after the accused allegedly stole a vehicle and took off when officers attempted to pull the driver over, earlier this week in Dryden.

DRYDEN -- Failing to stop for police led to the arrest of two individuals in Dryden. 

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued late on Wednesday, said on May 7 at about 2:49 a.m., officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driving in the community. 

The vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed and officers called off the pursuit, in the interest of public safety. 

The vehicle was later located in Southworth Township and once again, the driver refused to stop. 

A spike belt was employed on Highway 17, but before the vehicle came to a stop, it rammed a police vehicle. 

The driver was immediately arrested and the passenger, who initially fled the scene on foot, was located a short time later and also arrested. 

A 15-year-old Pickle Lake teen was charged with theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, resisting a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer and mischief under $5,000. 

A 16-year-old from Lac Seul First Nation was charged with theft over $5,000, assaulting a peace officer, dangerous operation, failing to stop for police, resisting a peace officers, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000, failing to comply with a release order, failure to comply with an undertakings, mischief over $5,000, flight from a peace officer, operation while impaired, alcohol and drugs and blood alcohol concentration, two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and failure to stop after an accident. 

The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
