MISSISSAUGA — The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has closed an investigation into the Rainy River OPP Detachment after a 17-year-old male fractured his right hand while in custody.

The teenager turned himself in on a bench warrant on April 12, to which officers placed him under arrest.

Later that night, the male punched the cell door and fractured his right hand.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and returned to custody.

Based on the SIU’s final report, SUI personnel interviewed the male and reviewed video footage that captured the events. Martino concluded the teenager was at fault for his injury and not to OPP.

Satisfied with the investigation, the file was closed.
