Taps off: Water restrictions imposed in Emo

‘Low raw water flow’ blamed for restrictions on tapping into municipal water supply.

EMO — The Township of Emo has restricted water usage until further notice.

The municipality is asking everyone who uses municipal water to check their water taps and make sure that they are off.

A notification posted Wednesday morning on the township of 1,300’s Facebook page says restrictions must be imposed “due to low raw water flow” in the municipality’s system.

Township chief administrative officer Crystal Gray told Newswatch the low flow was caused by a “high-volume usage that depleted our system.”

In other words, demand was more than the system could handle.

“Summertimes are always high-volume usage, and this has been an exceedingly dry summer,” Gray said.

“We have restrictions as to when you can water your lawns and that type of thing — it’s one side of the tracks one day, the other side the next day, back and forth.

“Not everybody respects that, but we don’t have a bylaw officer to enforce it, so we can’t monitor it, and (municipal) employees are only here during business hours. You can’t monitor it 24/7.

“So basically to correct the situation we have put a restriction on water usage for the public.”

Emo has also cut back its water supply to places outside the municipality’s boundaries, she added.

Gray said she sees an end in sight for Emo’s water difficulties.

“We hope to have everything be back up and running smoothly by the end of the weekend.”

The township will post on social media when restrictions are lifted, she said.
