THUNDER BAY — Electricity rates are set to rise 9.13 per cent for small business owners and 3.98 per cent for residential customers in Thunder Bay.

Business owners in Kenora, using 2,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, will see their rate increase 3.61 per cent, while residential customers will pay 3.14 per cent more.

Synergy North on Thursday announced the increases have been approved by the Ontario Energy Board.

Residential customers in Thunder Bay, using 750 kilowatt-hours per month, will pay an additional $4.55, according to Synergy North’s release. Small business customers, using 2,000 kilowatts per month, will pay $27.33 more.

In Kenora the increase is $3.75 for residential customers and $10.20 for small business customers.

The rates went into effect on May 1 and customers should see the increase reflected on their next monthly bill.

The province also announced the transition to summer time-of-use and tiered pricing, along with the ultra-low overnight pricing plan, which customers must advise Synergy North should they wish to switch to that plan.
