DRYDEN — Officers from the Dryden OPP detachment were out in full force over the long weekend, observing plenty of traffic violations in the area.
From Aug. 2 to Aug. 5, the OPP recorded a total of 451 traffic charges, including:
- 275 speeding charges
- 1 impaired charge
- 1 distracted driving charge
- 5 failures to wear seatbelt charges
Spokespeople with the OPP Northwest Region report that the leading causes of death or injury on Northern Ontario roads are distracted or inattentive driving, aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and impairment.
The OPP noted that failure to follow regulations set out in the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA) resulted in 16 additional charges.
Moreover, across the province, the Civic Long Weekend blitz resulted in a total of 8,050 charges associated with various traffic, marine and off-road vehicle infractions.
Among the traffic charges are
- 4,040 speeding charges
- 125 racing/stunt driving charges
- 235 impaired driving charges
- 69 distracted driving charges
- 554 no seatbelt charges
- 99 Move Over law charges
Officers also responded to six road fatalities and two off-road vehicle deaths during what the OPP had hoped would be a safe Civic Day long weekend for everyone.
“Drivers and other road users can significantly contribute to safer roads by avoiding taking unnecessary risks and complying with all traffic laws,” OPP Northwest Region stated in a release.
