Slow, no wake

SIOUX NARROWS-NESTOR FALLS – In the wake of flooding along the Rainy River region, the Township of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls is reminding boaters that their wake could undo several months of battling back the rising water.

“When boating please be mindful of your speed/wake and it may impact the infrastructure along and erosion of lake shorelines,” the Township posted on Facebook.

Although the water is starting to crest, the lake levels are still pretty high. The wake from boaters can put a strain on the sandbag, erode shorelines, and even damage person docks.

Lori Bazelo commented, “Yes please please please…. My sandbags are getting knocked over by the tubers and sight seers that are creating a massive wake in our bay. Many of our neighbours are desperately trying to hold their docks down with barrels as well.”

The Township advises the public to follow the 10/30 rule.

“If you are within 30 metres of the shore or closer, travel no faster than 10 kilometres per hour,” the Facebook post continued.

The current level of Lake of the Woods is 324.10 metres, over the 95th percentile level for this time of year, according to the Lake of the Wood Secretariat.
