Sixty-one forest fires burning in Northwest Region

A dozen new fires were confirmed on Tuesday. Ten of the 61 fires are considered not under control.

SIOUX LOOKOUT – A dozen new forest fires have been confirmed in the Northwest Fire Region as of Tuesday night.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said, in a release, there are now 61 total active fires burning in the region, 10 of which are not under control. One fire is being held, six are considered under control and 44 are being observed.

Three of the largest fires are Sioux Lookout 75, Sioux Lookout 76 and Sioux Lookout 77, which are being observed and have reached 188 hectares, 588 hectares and 900 hectares in size, respectively.

Sioux Lookout 78, located about 40 kilometres southeast of Big Trout Lake, is 652 hectares and is currently being observed.

Two other fires in the Big Trout Lake vicinity are also being observed.

The wildland fire hazard ranges from low to extreme across the Northwest Region, the more perilous area on the eastern side of the region, with scattered pockets of low hazard areas across the southern section.
