MISSISSAUGA – According to the director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, on-duty officers had no time or opportunity to prevent a suspect from falling from a motel railing last November in Dryden.

On Nov. 5, 2023, officers responded to a call for service that was disconnected. The OPP dispatcher traced the call to a room at the Chalet Inn Motel on Government Street, but no one answered the door.

The person of interest exited the room through a rear door and began to flee from the officers.

Seeing the suspect climbing over a railing, the officers urged him not to jump, but the man fell, fracturing both of his legs.

Additionally, the suspect was arrested for violating a release order.

Martino noted that once on the ground, the officers acted promptly to arrange for medical care.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
