SIOUX LOOKOUT—The Municipality of Sioux Lookout wants its residents and region to be aware of several important updates.

Their notice indicates that these updates affect several areas as follows:

Wellington Street detour:

The Wellington Street detour will remain in place longer than anticipated. They have successfully repaired the sanitary sewer main and back filled the excavated area, however, because the roadbed has deteriorated due to the excess amount of water in the ground from the flood, they cannot risk reopening Wellington Street until the province reopens the Ed Ariano by-pass, which will significantly reduce the number of large/heavy vehicles coming through the Wellington Street corridor.

According to the Municipality, they have reached out to the Province requesting, “That the Ministry of Transport of Ontario, have aggregate added to the by-pass reopened, but we are continuing to work with the province to achieve a positive response.”

Boat launches:

Residents are to be aware that the municipality is making Boat Launch passes available to the public, and urge extreme caution when using these facilities due to the flooding conditions. They specifically mention that:

Docks are installed at the following locations: Boat Bay; Botham’s Bay; Deception Bay, Sturgeon River and West Hudson. Boat launches at Superior Junction are accessible, but the water is very high. The ramps are under water. The public is asked to use this area at their own risk. Further more, according to their notice, “The Five Mile boat launch is extremely unsafe at the moment and should not be used. The ramp is underwater and the secondary ramp is unavailable as the dock is currently tied up and floating in that area. Water has also entered into the parking area. Water levels at West Point Cove are also extremely high and the docks are in, but barricaded off for safety reasons."

Water levels have reached the end of the ramp, but it is still possible to launch from West Point Cove. Extreme caution is urged when using this location. Additionally, if launching from West Point Cove, residents should note that the water levels in Pelican Lake are very high, and there is minimal clearance if travelling under the Iron Bridge (CN rail bridge). The municipality recommends avoiding travelling under the bridge at this time.

Sandbags:

Members of the public wishing to access sandbags this weekend can once again visit the Recreation Centre during regular hours on Saturday and Sunday.  The public is invited to continue to fill their sandbags at the Third Avenue Sports Complex.
