ALBERTON — Two people from the Rainy River District have been arrested on charges related to alleged cocaine trafficking.
According to an OPP media release issued on Friday, during the investigation police recovered 110 grams of suspected cocaine, $1,200 in Canadian currency and a flat-screen television, which police said had been previously reported stolen.
A 47-year-old Fort Frances man and a 41-year-old Rainy River First Nation woman were arrested shortly after the police stopped their vehicle while conducting a traffic stop along Highway 11 in the township of Alberton, just west of Fort Frances, just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
They were each charged with one count of possessing a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking and possessing proceeds of crime under $5,000.
Police said the arrests were conducted by the Rainy River and Dryden OPP community street crime units in partnership with members of the Treaty Three Police Service's street crime unit.
The 47-year-old was also charged with failing to comply with a probation order and possessing property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The individuals were held in police custody and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Fort Frances on Thursday.
The police encourage residents with information about drugs to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or to provide information anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.
