ATIKOKAN — Rob Ferguson has spent the last eight years as an Atikokan town councillor, but he'll spend the next four years as mayor.

Ferguson prevailed by a resounding margin over opponent Robbin Harper in Monday night's municipal election to succeed long-time incumbent Dennis Brown.

Brown decided not to seek re-election after nearly 25 years as the town's mayor, with a total of more than 40 years in municipal politics.

Ferguson secured 71 per cent of the vote.

Ferguson has said that his top priorities are to foster new economic development by making the downtown area accommodating to entrepreneurs looking to open small businesses. He said he would also look to welcome the Waasigan Power line project, which will make Atikokan the project hub for the next five years.
