SIOUX LOOKOUT – Ontario Provincial Police are observing Canada Road Safety Week, May 14-20, with an eye to seatbelt use, good driving and more.

Road Safety Week is a national campaign for improved public compliance with safe driving measures to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s roads.

Sioux Lookout OPP Const. Andrea Degagne told Newswatch there’s a “big four” of road safety concerns: failure to wear a seatbelt; cellphone use and other distracted driving; aggressive driving; and impaired driving.

Officers are conducting compliance checks for seatbelt use and other safety laws, she said.

“And our RIDE programs are definitely going be out this week looking to make sure that our drivers are all sober and safe on the road.”

The theme this year is “Road Safety – Every Road. Every Day. Everyone.”

“Officers will be out in our communities monitoring compliance with traffic safety laws as part of this year’s Road Safety Week campaign,” Insp. Karl Duewel said in a news release.

“A successful traffic safety campaign in our communities is one in which everyone is found in compliance.”

The OPP want to see that “every journey ends with a safe arrival,” Degagne said.
