KENORA – The message not to drive while impaired hit home for most motorists over the Christmas holidays, but unfortunately, not for everyone.
Treaty Three Police Service, in a release issued on Thursday, said it conducted 62 RIDE checkpoints over the holiday season, stopping 560 vehicles.
As a result, 10 drivers where charged with impaired driving or driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
The checkpoints were set up to check for sobriety and signs of impaired driving. The checkpoints took place between Dec. 1 and Jan. 2, across 23 Treaty Three communities, including Grassy Narrows First Nation, Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, Wabigoon First Nation and Eagle Lake First Nation.
“T3PS commends the majority of drivers who made responsible decisions over the holidays, contributing to safer roads for everyone. However, we remind all drivers of the serious consequences of impaired driving and encourage continued vigilance and safe driving habits year-round,” said Treaty 3 officials in the release.
