The Terrace Bay Dragfest attracts thousands of attendees to the town.

TERRACE BAY – The Superior Classics Car Club is looking for artisans, crafters, car part merchants and other retailers to join their on-site market on Aug. 3, at the 25th annual Terrace Bay Drag Fest.

Club president and race co-ordinator Ray Gionet said they are planning a family day on that Saturday.

"We figure we'll have more of a turnout that day and we want to have something that interests everyone," he said. "While the racers are racing, their families can browse the vendors and purchase items, souvenirs and even car parts."

Gionet said the cost to be a market vendor is only the standard entry fee to come through the gate. An area will be set up for the market vendors which is separate from the already established food vendors.

"We have our regular food vendors and we need one more," he said.

"We are looking for something unique with a different type of food, perhaps something like a Greek style food."

The food vendors have an exclusive right for the entire three-day weekend and are set apart from the market vendors who will attend only the one day.

Gionet said the club is optimistic about attracting more people for the 25th event but the closure of the Terrace Bay mill has put things in what he called a "totally different perspective."

"We have a lot of people from Terrace Bay that come to the races and if they're unemployed and hoping that the mill opens up, they're not going to be spending a lot of money," he noted.

Gionet pointed out that many of the town's volunteer firefighters who are certified tradespeople were employed at the mill and have relocated to mining operations and other jobs outside the community.

"We rely on them for help at the track (as first responders and firefighters) and we're hoping that we have enough of them (available) to be with us for the August weekend," he said.
