Red Lake writer starts flute lessons

From piano to flute, Alabama Yutzy hopes to teach music theory to the Red Lake community.

RED LAKE -- Local author Alabama Yutzy has begun to offer young people in the Red Lake community her services as a flute teacher.

Yutzy has already published her first full length novel called The Bruised Dream. Her story is about a family that fosters children from up in Rural Northern communities and chronicles the lives and challenges that come. Yutzy states that even though she used her own similar experiences to draw from when writing, the story is fiction.

As she continues to pursue her writing career, Yutzy decided to work flute teaching business to her schedule. She has always been interested in music, starting back to when she began to learn to play the piano at four years old. As she grew older, she had also joined the local music group Strings and Such, where she has played off and on at events in the community. When she was around age 12, a friend had given her a flute to try. Yutzy then taught herself to pay it from online videos and self-guided lessons.

As of the last few weeks, Yutzy opened herself up for lessons. She plans to use her knowledge to teach others in the community music theory and how to play the flute. She has just started advertising and already taken on her first student. Furthermore, she hopes to make learning music fun with group lessons chalked full of games and activities to coincide with the lessons.

“ I hope to make music fun and interactive,” says Yutzy.

In addition to teaching, Yutzy has been attending an alternative college writing program at The Author Conservatory. It is an online three-year program that teaches writing from the ground up, with real published writers guiding the students along. She has just started her second year. The first year, she wrote a short story called A Summer of Lattes. The story is about a young woman working in a coffee shop over the summer as she works through some family issues.

This year she will be starting a new short story, a ‘Novella’ for her program. Yutzy hopes to continue to pursue her writing as a career and grow her flute teaching lessons.

“I want to write stories that will bless and help people,” says Yutzy.
