Red Lake wants residents to Be Bear Wise

As April still seems to bring in snow and rain, it is an excellent time to remind residents of Red Lake that as the weather becomes warmer, the bear population will soon come out of hibernation.

Be Bear Wise!

RED LAKE - the Municipality of Red Lake would like to remind residents that the Feeding of Wildlife By-Law states “that no person shall feed or make available food attractants or other substances for the consumption of wildlife.”

To minimize wildlife encounters, residents must ensure all attractants such as food products/scraps, garbage, pet food and birdseed are correctly stored, and all waste is to be placed at the curb on the morning of pickup. Residents are advised not to put their garbage the night before pick-up, and doing so may propose a danger to the community.

The Municipality is responsible for enforcing all Municipal By-Laws. The Red Lake OPP works collectively with By-Law Enforcement Officer to ensure the safety of our residents as it relates to wildlife encounters, including bear encounters.

If the bear poses an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, call 911.

For non-emergency encounters or information and advice on reducing bear attractants, call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.
