RED LAKE — The Miss McKenzie II is back in service.

The ferry, which connects McKenzie Island to mainland Red Lake, was taken out of service on Monday after the issue was discovered. It was initially believed to be a transmission failure, but a local mechanic has ruled that out.

The municipality announced Tuesday morning the ferry is back in service.

Red Lake chief administrative officer Mark Vermette said the ferry was pulled from Mackenzie Island to the mainland in Cochenour Tuesday morning, where it was removed from the water so mechanics could run a full diagnostic on the lower engine.

Vermette said the ferry is the only ship owned by the municipality and many residents living on the Island have their own personal boats.

“Many islanders support their neighbours and one another to ensure the continuation of access to the mainland and essential supplies,” he said.
