Red Apple reopens in Sioux Lookout two years after roof collapse

The store was closed in March 2022 when snow accumulation led to the roof caving in just an hour before it was closing for the night.

SIOUX LOOKOUT – The town of Sioux Lookout is seeing red all over again.

More than two years after a snow-induced roof collapse forced owners of the Red Apple store to close for repairs and renovations, the business reopened its doors earlier this month, with customers lined up down the street eager to see the revamped space.

Store manager Peter Geddes said it was a long wait, but it’s exciting to have the Red Apple open again.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic to be back serving the people of Sioux Lookout,” Geddes said. “Red Apple was down for a short period of time due to some structural damage, but the community has been extremely welcoming and supportive since our grand opening last Friday.

“We (invite) everybody to come down and enjoy all the specials and the features we have right now.”

Losing the store for two years certainly had an impact on consumers, who have limited choices in a community of 5,500, Geddes added.

“It’s a hardship for the community. I know the Red Apple was missed, tremendously. I’ve met a lot of people over the last week-and-a-half and I’m hearing extremely positive comments about the reopening of Red Apple.

“It’s just been a fantastic opening.”

The store closed in March 2022 after its roof collapsed. No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred about an hour before the store was scheduled to close for the night. At the time there were four employees and no customers inside the store.
