KENORA — The Kenora Public Library is starting the summer with a special event that will allow children to explore the library in a creative way.

Library CEO Crystal Alcock said the library will host a Nerf Battle on July 5 for children ages six to 16.

“We just thought that would be a really fun way to sort of kick off the summer holidays for the kids and let them blow off some steam, and run around the library and see what we have here,” Alcock said.

The library will have two-time slots available. Children between the ages of six to 10 will have between 5:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and those between 11 and 16 will have from 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The library will be closed to the public to ensure they don’t get hit by friendly fire while searching for a good book or DVD.

Alcock said the library will provide the ammunition. Kids should only bring Nerf Branded weapons to the battle because the darts do not work in off-brand weapons.

Kids can run through the stack and shoot at their friends or they can go to specific areas designed for target practice.

“We're going to have a few different organized games set up for them. Not all kids are going to want to be in the thick of everything and chasing each other, so we want to have, sort of a, an area where it's just target practice," Alcock said. "You know, maybe some moving targets and cup towers and that kind of thing where they don’t have to be in all the chaos.”

The library is also asking that kids bring safety goggles to the event, but will also have a limited supply of safety glasses for those that do not have access to safety glasses.
